After Tottenham Hotspur suffered a narrow 0-2 defeat to Manchester United in the Premier League, manager Thomas Frank publicly defended captain Christian Romero's early red card in the first half and emphasized the team's resilience in adversity.
In the post-match press conference, Frank believed that the team performed well in the first 30 minutes and played a close game against a Manchester United team in good form away from home.
Speaking about the decision, he said he had watched the replay repeatedly: "A red card is a red card. Christian was obviously going for the ball, thinking the opponent had moved, and that resulted in a red card."
Frank does not believe that Romero’s playing style is too reckless and whether he needs to tone down his actions while retaining his aggressiveness.
"You play with passion and aggression, but there's a delicate line to follow when you do that," Frank pointed out. Looking at Romero's career, his number of red cards wasn't actually that high, as many people believe.
When asked by reporters if he regretted appointing Romero as captain, and even suggested stripping him of his armband as punishment, Frank gave a firm denial. Frank said, "No, not at all. In fact, he said he felt sorry about it and apologized to his teammates in the locker room."
"To be fair, I don't think he intended to get a red card after 28 minutes." Frank not only said he wasn't considering changing the captain, but also praised Romero as one of the most important players in the team, capable of leading the whole team.
Despite the red card and injuries compounding the team's woes, Frank remains confident in the team's morale. He praised the players for not collapsing despite playing with ten men, but for fighting to the very end. He believes that as long as they continue to do the right things, good results will follow.
