Giuseppe Marotta: An important experience is over, now we have to get back to our best as soon as possible

Inter Milan’s 63-match season came to an end after a tough defeat at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte in the last 16 of the 2025 Club World Cup. After the match, club president and CEO Giuseppe Marotta gave his thoughts on the team’s performance.

Giuseppe Marotta said: “This is the end of a long and challenging season. Our team continued to fight on many fronts and remained competitive for Italian football until the last game. After 63 games of intense competition, more than 20 more than some of our main competitors, we naturally demanded more from the team, which also forced us to carefully evaluate the players' mental and physical endurance.”

“This match confirmed my previous point that if the match took place in March, the result might be different. Now, we must regroup and regain our momentum to welcome the new season with the same determination and adherence to the unique values of the club. Inter Milan’s history has repeatedly reminded us that we must continue to pursue excellence and try our best to perform at the best level in every competition. Even next season, we will still play in all competitions.”

“I would like to express my sincerest thanks to all the players and club staff. I have already expressed my gratitude to Filippo Inzaghi, but I must also thank Christian Chivu in particular for his outstanding contribution this season. This experience was extremely valuable for us and it also allowed us to test several young players with great potential who will officially join the team next season.”

"Now, it's time to rest and recharge for the next campaign. The next season will be just as demanding, but the ultimate goal is the World Cup, when many of our players will have national duty."

"Regarding Lautaro's remarks, I have a positive view. As the captain, he mentioned some hypothetical issues and facts, and also mentioned a point that I often emphasize, that if the players no longer want to stay, they should leave. So far, no player has explicitly expressed such a wish. Perhaps he is referring to the situation of Calhanoglu, which we will deal with properly as soon as possible. Such situations occur every year at the end of the season, and we have always dealt with them in a calm and open manner. This time will be no exception."

"We will communicate with Calhanoglu and handle all relevant matters in the best way for the club, the team and him personally. As Lautaro said, only with a winning mentality can you go further, not only in football, but also in society as a whole. As for Calhanoglu, we are always grateful for everything he has done for the club. With the opening of the summer transfer window, if the players want to leave, they need to express a clear and firm willingness, which applies not only to him, but to all players."

"At present, Calhanoglu, like other players, has not expressed any intention to leave the team, and we are willing to listen to their ideas. So far, no one has made it clear that they want to leave, and the overall atmosphere in the team remains tense. Despite this, they have demonstrated their value in the past few days. Unfortunately, as the season enters the 63rd game, the players' physical and mental state are overdrawn, which is normal at the end of the season, and they are looking for additional motivation."
