Sandro Wagner admitted that the team did not perform at the level they should have in the game

In the fourth round of the Bundesliga, Augsburg lost 1-4 to Mainz, failing to secure their first home win of the season. After the game, coach Sandro Wagner and several players expressed their thoughts on the loss.

Sandro Wagner said: "We were desperate to get our first home win of the season and had set our sights high. It's a shame we couldn't give our fans a better afternoon. We knew how Mainz would react and that's how they scored the first two goals."

"We should have been better on the counterattack when we had more people. But sometimes we didn't communicate well enough and we didn't perform to the best of our ability in some moments. In addition, some aspects didn't go as planned, which is why we are disappointed."

Robin Fellhall said after the game: "Our ball possession performance was not ideal, with a success rate of only 40% in the first half. Even when we had the advantage in numbers, the passes were still too sloppy, resulting in frequent mistakes and the opponent seizing the opportunity to counterattack. It was these details that ultimately determined the outcome of the game."

“Sometimes we need to opt for more direct long balls and not overcomplicate our attack. We have to show a new look in the next game against Heidenheim and go for the win. We didn’t achieve our goals in this match.”

Finn Dahmen said: "We made too many mistakes, almost inviting Mainz to score. They scored both of their first two shots, which is unacceptable. We should have remained calm after conceding the goal. In the first half, we tried to get back into the game and believed we could turn the situation around after the opponent was sent off, but we may have overdone it in some aspects. In the end, we were punished for it. Overall, our performance was not ideal."
