According to veteran NBA reporter Anthony Slater on Tuesday, Jonathan Kuminga and his agent have proposed the latest contract extension plan to the Golden State Warriors: as long as the Warriors change the team option in the contract to a player option, Kuminga is willing to sign immediately.

The 22-year-old Kuminga, the seventh overall pick in the 2021 first round, has played for the Warriors for four seasons. During this time, he played 258 regular-season games for the Warriors, averaging 12.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 50.7% from the field and 33.2% from three-point range.

Kuminga also played in 34 playoff games for the Warriors, averaging 7.0 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game, and won the 2022 NBA championship with the team.

After the 2024-25 season, Kuminga officially became a restricted free agent. The Warriors immediately offered him a two-year, $45 million extension, with a team option for the second year. Kuminga's agent, Aaron Turner, proposed an alternative three-year, $82 million contract, but the team rejected it. The conflict between the two sides stemmed from the Warriors' insistence on making the second year of the contract a team option and their refusal to grant Kuminga a trade veto. They demanded that Kuminga choose between a two-year, $45 million extension and a one-year, $7.9 million qualifying offer.

With the 2025-26 season about to begin, Kuminga's contract extension negotiations with the Warriors remain at a stalemate. Shams Charania reported on Monday that the Warriors recently adjusted their contract extension offer to three years and $72.5 million, with the third year still being a team option.

Regarding the Warriors' latest contract extension offer, Slater revealed the attitude of Kuminga's team on the "NBA Today" program on Tuesday: "I did talk to Jonathan Kuminga's agent Aaron Turner this morning, and the message they conveyed this week was 'Change the team option to a player option, and that's it.

Slater further stated, "The subtext of this statement is: If the team option in the contract suddenly becomes a player option, Jonathan Kuminga will not only sign it, but will fully agree with the mission given to him by the team."

"In the words of Kuminga's agent Turner, this 'mission' is to help Stephen Curry and Draymond Green win their fifth championship ring, while also helping Jimmy Butler win his first championship."
