The Washington Wizards announced Tuesday that Cameron Whitmore has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his upper limb. He is expected to be sidelined indefinitely until the condition is fully cured.
Whitmore has not played for the Wizards since December 5th: he first missed four consecutive games due to a "coach's decision," and then missed two more regular season games due to right shoulder soreness. The Wizards officially stated that further examination revealed a blood clot in Whitmore's right shoulder. They added that they will closely monitor and provide timely updates on Whitmore's recovery.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is not uncommon in the NBA; Damian Lillard, Victor Wahlbanama, Osar Thompson, Brandon Ingram, and Chris Bosh have all experienced extended periods of absence due to it. However, the Wizards are optimistic about Whitmore's full recovery and believe his career will not be affected.
The 21-year-old Whitmore primarily plays forward and was selected by the Houston Rockets with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NBA draft. He played two seasons with the Rockets, appearing in a total of 98 regular season games, averaging 10.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 0.8 assists per game, with a field goal percentage of 44.9% and a three-point percentage of 35.7%.
In July 2025, Whitmore was traded by the Rockets to the rebuilding Wizards. To date, he has played 21 games for the Wizards, averaging 9.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.7 assists in 16.9 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 45.6% and a three-point percentage of 28.6%.
