In the first round of this season's Champions League group stage, Villarreal lost 0-1 to Tottenham Hotspur. After the game, coach Marcelino García Toral said that although he accepted the result of the game, he did not think the defeat was entirely justified based on the overall performance of the game.

In addition, the Villarreal coach also questioned some of the referee's decisions in this game, especially the yellow card decisions. He said: "We all saw the yellow cards. For the second yellow card (when Mikautadze was brought down as the last player with the ball), the referee did not give any reasonable explanation, which I really cannot understand."  

"An international referee with experience in the Champions League did not show a red card for such an obvious foul. As for the first yellow card (Simmons' second yellow card), the situation was also very clear. He did not have the opportunity to touch the ball, but he was directly shown a red card. We can only accept this decision."
