Barcelona announced on Monday that it had terminated the contract with French central defender Clement Lenglet in advance. Lenglet then joined Atletico Madrid as a free agent with a contract until June 2028.
According to Spanish media reports, Lenglet gave up a total of 32 million euros in salary for the next two years in order to facilitate the termination of his contract. His contract with Barcelona was originally scheduled to expire in June 2027.
The 29-year-old Lenglet came from the youth training of Nancy Lorraine and made his debut for the first team in Ligue 2 on September 27, 2013. He moved to Sevilla in January 2017 and joined Barcelona for 35.9 million euros the following year.
During his time at Barcelona, Lenglet made 160 appearances, scored 7 goals and provided 3 assists, winning the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. Due to his unsatisfactory performance, he was loaned to Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa from 2022 onwards.
In August 2024, Lenglet joined Atletico Madrid on loan from Barcelona. So far, he has played 34 times for Atletico, contributing 3 goals and 2 assists.
