Champions League – Real Madrid lost 2-4 to Benfica, failing to advance directly to the Round of 16.


In the 8th round of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid, playing away, lost 2-4 to Benfica after two goals from Mbappe, suffered red cards for Raul Asensio and Rodrygo and conceded a goal in the final stages.


Three minutes into the match, Benfica launched an attack, but Amar Dedic was fouled by Real Madrid midfielder Chuameni as he received the ball, resulting in a yellow card for Chuameni. In the 35th minute, Real Madrid took a corner kick, and Raul Asensio headed the ball towards goal, but it bounced off the ground and was saved by Benfica goalkeeper Trubin.


In the 36th minute, Pavlidis chipped a pass from the penalty area to the goal area, where Sheldrup headed the ball into the net, leveling the score at 1-1 for Benfica. In the 41st minute, Benfica attacked from a corner kick, and Barreiro's header went wide of the post.


In the 45th minute, Chuameni fouled Otamendi, and the referee awarded Benfica a penalty. Pavlidis then converted the penalty, putting Benfica ahead 2-1 against Real Madrid.

In the 66th minute, Real Madrid continued their attack. Bellingham received a pass and fired a shot, but the ball went over the goal. In the 76th minute, Rodrygo received the ball outside the penalty area and took a long-range shot, but the ball was blocked by Benfica goalkeeper Trubin. In the 79th minute, Real Madrid created another attacking opportunity. Rodrygo received the ball and took a low shot, but it was also blocked by Trubin.


In stoppage time of the second half, Barreiro was brought down by Raul Asensio while dribbling forward, resulting in Asensio receiving a yellow card and being sent off. Rodrygo then expressed his dissatisfaction to the referee and was shown a red card.

In the final moments, Arthurs took a free kick, and goalkeeper Trubin headed the ball into the net, extending Benfica's lead to 4-2.


Ultimately, Real Madrid lost 2-4 to Benfica away from home. After losing three points, Real Madrid sits in 9th place in the standings with 15 points, thus needing to participate in the playoffs to continue their fight for a place in the round of 16.
