Marseille officially announced on Tuesday that they have parted ways with manager Roberto De Zerbi, effective immediately. No successor has yet been announced.
De Zerbi took over as manager of Marseille in July 2024, leading the team to a runner-up finish in Ligue 1 in his first season. However, Marseille's campaign this season has been fraught with difficulties on both fronts: they failed to advance from the Champions League knockout stage and were then thrashed by Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1. After this defeat, they sit fourth in the league with 39 points (12 wins, 3 draws, 16 losses), a full 12 points behind the leaders.
The crushing defeat in this "El Clásico" has brought forward the planned farewell between the two sides, originally scheduled for this summer, to take place midway through the season. Marseille explained in a statement: "This was a difficult decision made after careful consideration by all parties, and was based on the club's competitive interests at the end of the season."
"Marseille is deeply grateful for Roberto De Zerbi's dedication, professionalism and meticulousness, qualities that were particularly evident when the team finished as runners-up in the league in the 2024/25 season."
"The club wishes him all the best in his future career."
According to journalists such as Ben Jacobs, De Zerbi is now extremely eager to return to the Premier League. With Pep Guardiola's future uncertain, he has become a potential candidate for the managerial position at both Manchester City and Manchester United.
For De Zerbi, leading a team in the Premier League is nothing new. During his tenure at Brighton from 2022 to 2024, he led the team to their best-ever Premier League finish of 6th and their first-ever qualification for the Europa League Round of 16.
