Real Betis announced on its official website on Thursday that Leeds United's Dominican international defender Junior Firpo has returned to the club as a free agent after leaving the club at the end of his contract.
According to Real Betis' official statement, Firpo has signed on a three-year contract with the club which runs until the summer of 2028. According to La Liga's regulations, Firpo's release clause is set at €55 million.
It is worth mentioning that this will also means that Firpo will return to his childhood club after 6 years.
About Junior Firpo
Firpo, 28, was born on August 22, 1996 in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. He is 1.84 meters tall and primarily plays as a left-wing back. He can also play as a left midfielder. He has dual citizenship of the Dominican Republic and Spain.
Firpo played for the youth academies of many non-league clubs. He joined the Real Betis youth academy at the age of 12, began playing for its B team in February 2015 and completed his Real Betis first-team debut in February 2018, becoming the first Dominican player in La Liga history.
In August of the following year, Firpo moved to Barcelona for €12 million.
However, due to the team's collective poor performances, Firpo was not particularly given much chances during his two-year spell at Barça.
In July 2021, Firpo joined Leeds United for €15 million.
During his four-year spell with the Whites, Firpo played 119 times for the newly-promoted Premier League side in all competitions, scored 6 goals, assisted 22 times, and won the EFL Championship once with the club.
