Freiburg issued a statement on Tuesday confirming the extension of Florian Müller's contract, which was originally set to expire in June. As is customary, neither party disclosed the specific length of the extension or contract details.
The 28-year-old Müller is a 1.90-meter-tall German-born goalkeeper who made his Bundesliga debut for Mainz 05 on March 3, 2018. He made a total of 44 appearances for Mainz, during which time he was loaned out to Freiburg for one season.
In January 2023, Müller transferred from Stuttgart to Freiburg for €1.5 million. He has made 47 appearances for Freiburg to date, including two penalty saves by Hertha Berlin in this season's German Cup quarter-final.
Following the contract extension, Freiburg's sporting director, Clemens Hartenbach, stated: "First of all, Florian is an excellent goalkeeper. A player with such talent and integrity is the ideal choice for the goalkeeping team and the entire squad. We are very pleased to extend Florian's contract because we know he is a player we can always trust."
Müller added, “We work very well as a team here, and I haven’t forgotten my personal goals and ambitions. I feel very comfortable at the club and in this city. I hope to continue to do my best to ensure the team’s success.”
Whether Müller will continue to replace first-choice goalkeeper Noah Artubolou in the German Cup semi-final against Stuttgart at the end of April remains to be decided by head coach Julian Schuster. He is currently a substitute for Freiburg and is ahead of third-choice goalkeeper Yannick Huth in the pecking order.
