Freiburg officially announced on Wednesday that they have renewed the contract of captain Christian Gunter.
As is customary, neither party has disclosed the specific duration or other details of the new contract. However, according to Kicker magazine, the contract is expected to be extended from 2026 to June 30, 2027.
The 32-year-old Gunter joined Freiburg's youth academy in 2006 and made his Bundesliga debut for the first team on December 8, 2012. As Freiburg's long-time first-choice left-back, he has now broken the club's record with 453 appearances, contributing 14 goals and 62 assists.
Following the contract extension, Freiburg's sporting director, Clemens Hartenbach, stated: "In the past, Christian's athletic ability and personal qualities have been widely praised. He himself would probably say: 'Stop talking nonsense and get on the field!' What's amazing is that Christian hasn't slacked off in any aspect. We are very pleased with this news."
Gunter added in the announcement: "I remain highly motivated, and there's nothing better than playing for Freiburg. As a team, we hope to continue our good momentum from this season's success. I look forward to the many challenges ahead."
