The NBA's highly anticipated game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Golden State Warriors, originally scheduled for January 24th Central Time, has been abruptly canceled and postponed due to security concerns stemming from a fatal shooting incident near the arena.
The NBA and the Minnesota Timberwolves have released a statement confirming that the game will be postponed by 24 hours and rescheduled to 4:30 p.m. local time on January 25. The Timberwolves emphasized in their announcement that this difficult decision was made to prioritize the safety of the Minneapolis community and its fans.
The immediate cause of the game's postponement was a shooting involving federal law enforcement officers on Saturday afternoon. Police confirmed that 37-year-old Alex Pretti was shot and killed during a standoff with law enforcement. The incident occurred in a busy commercial area, less than two miles from the Timberwolves' home arena, Target Center.
Tensions quickly escalated as this marked the third shooting by federal agents in the area this month. The Minnesota National Guard was deployed to assist police in maintaining order as protesters gathered at the scene.
As a result, the Minnesota Twins Winter Fan Festival, held across from the arena, was forced to end an hour early and all visitors were evacuated.
