According to NBA reporter Mark Stein on Saturday, the Detroit Pistons are interested in acquiring Timberwolves center Naz Reid through a trade this summer. They are looking for an inside player with outside shooting ability and see Reid as one of the potential candidates.
Naz Reid, 25, is a key rotation player for the Timberwolves. He played 80 games in the regular season this season, averaging a career-high 14.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, shooting 46.2% from the field and 37.9% from three-point range. In the playoffs, he averaged 10.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game, shooting 50.9% from the field and 39.7% from three-point range. However, the Timberwolves were still eliminated by the Oklahoma City Thunder 1-4 in the Western Conference Finals.
As of now, Reed has not decided whether to exercise the $15 million player option for the 2025/26 season. Although he has not ruled out the possibility of returning to the Timberwolves as a substitute, he believes that he has the ability to start.
In addition to Naz Reid, the Pistons also showed great interest in Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers. Turner, 29 years old, is the Pacers' core player. He played 72 games in the regular season this season, averaging 15.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game, shooting 48.1% and 39.6% from three-point range. After entering the playoffs, he averaged 15.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game, helping the Pacers defeat the New York Knicks and enter the finals.
What is worrying is that Turner will become an unrestricted free agent this summer. But ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst pointed out that given the Pacers' excellent performance in the playoffs this season, the team management does not rule out returning to the luxury tax zone to retain the core lineup.
It is still unknown whether the Pistons have a substantial chance to sign Reed or Turner. According to NBA salary experts, the Pistons will have about $28.2 million in salary space in the 2025 offseason. If the Timberwolves or the Pacers make it clear that they will give up Reed or Turner, the Pistons can use this plan to strengthen their inside lineup.
