Chris Wilder returns to Sheffield United for third spell as manager

Championship team Sheffield United officially announced that Chris Wilder has officially returned to Bramall Lane and will serve as the team's head coach for the third time.

Wilder has signed a contract with the club to coach until the summer of 2027 and will officially return to the coaching bench in the Championship match against Charlton Athletic this Saturday.

The move follows the dismissal of Ruben Selles, who lost his first five league games of the season, including a 5-0 defeat at Ipswich Town, which saw the club drop to the bottom of the table.

Sheffield United's board said in a statement: "After a difficult start to the season, the board believes that changes are necessary to stabilise the team and strengthen our promotion push. While we have previously tried to adopt a different style of play, the results have not met expectations."

"Wilder returns with his proven leadership and unparalleled understanding of Sheffield United and we are confident he can restore momentum, unite the squad and fans and deliver the results required to achieve our goals."

The 57-year-old Wilder has a long history with Sheffield United. He was a former player and, during his first spell as manager from 2016 to 2021, he led the club through consecutive promotions from League One to the Championship and then to the Premier League, ultimately achieving a ninth-place finish in the 2019-20 Premier League season.

Although Wilder failed to prevent the team from being relegated in his second spell, he has always been a hero in the hearts of fans. During his time away from Sheffield United, Wilder briefly coached Middlesbrough and Watford before returning to Bramall Lane in 2023.

However, last season the team finished third in the Championship and ultimately lost to Sunderland in the play-off final, missing out on a chance to return to the Premier League. After failing to secure promotion to the Premier League, Wilder's contract was terminated in June 2025.

Now, Sheffield United still chooses to believe in Wilder, hoping that his return can help Sheffield United re-unite the strength of the team and fans and reverse the decline this season.
