Benfica Club officially announced that Argentine midfielder Enzo Barrenechea, who plays for Aston Villa, has officially joined the team on loan.
Barrenechea will play until the end of the 2025-26 season, wearing the team's No. 5 jersey. According to information disclosed by the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM), Benfica loaned Barrenechea from Premier League team Aston Villa for 3 million euros.
The agreement includes a buyout option worth 12 million euros, which will become mandatory if certain targets are met. In addition, Aston Villa will enjoy 30% of future transfer proceeds, capped at 10 million euros.
In an interview, Barrenetxea expressed his joy at joining Benfica: "I will do my best on the court and hope to get the support of the fans throughout the season."
The 24-year-old Barrenetxea came from the youth training of Newell's Old Boys in Argentina. He moved to Sion, Switzerland in the summer of 2019, and then joined Juventus in January 2020. In November 2022, he made his Juventus first-team debut in the Champions League group match against Paris Saint-Germain.
In the 2023-24 season, Barrenetchea was loaned to Serie A Frosinone, where he played 39 times and scored 1 goal. In the summer of 2024, he moved to Aston Villa, but was loaned to La Liga Valencia after pre-season training, and contributed 32 appearances, 1 goal and 2 assists in the 2024-25 season.
Thanks to his stable performance in Spain, Barrenetchea was selected for the Argentina national team and was called up in November 2024 and June 2025, although he has not yet made his official international debut.
