Arsenal drew 2-2 with Liverpool, Arteta said the team's performance in the first 20 minutes was unacceptable

Arsenal lost two goals in just 87 seconds at Anfield and fell behind Liverpool 0-2. In the second half, Gabriel Martinelli and Mikel Merino scored successively to help Arsenal tenaciously equalize the score and snatch a precious point from the Premier League champions.

However, after the game, coach Mikel Arteta made no secret of his disappointment, saying that the team's performance in the early stages was totally unacceptable and far from the level Arsenal should have.

Just a few days ago, Arsenal was eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-finals. In the middle of the first half of this game, the team was in trouble after Cody Gakpo and Luis Dias scored consecutive goals in just 87 seconds.

In the second half, Martinelli scored the first goal for the team, and then Merino scored again to equalize the score. However, the midfielder received a red card shortly after scoring, which made Arsenal's situation more tense in the final stage. In the stoppage time, Odegaard missed a great chance to score the winning goal, and Liverpool's Robertson's goal was disallowed due to a foul. The two sides finally shook hands and made peace with 2-2.

Although the team showed a strong rebound, Arteta was not satisfied with the players' tenacious performance in an interview with Sky Sports after the game.

Arteta said: "I'm not proud of it because our performance in the first 20 minutes was unacceptable. It was not the level we should have been at. After that, it was too late to react. Although the reaction was good, the performance during that period was not up to standard."

“It’s not about reaction, it’s about action.”

When asked if the team was affected by the Champions League elimination, Arteta was firm: "If you can't stand this rhythm, don't fight for the championship."

"Because when you're competing for a championship, you can win or you can lose, but then there's the next game and the next game."

"We have to hold ourselves to that standard. Otherwise, you're kidding yourself. And to me, that's unacceptable."
