New Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni has suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture..

Liverpool confirmed on their official website on Wednesday that new signing, Italy U19s international defender wonderkid Giovanni Leoni, has suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture.

According to Liverpool's official statement, team doctors immediately assessed Leoni's injury after he was stretchered off the pitch. However, because his bruising still has not subsided, they have not yet been able to schedule him to undergo a scan.

The club will arrange him to undergo a scan in a few days, once the bruising has completely subsided, to determine the player's expected duration of absence.

However, it is certain that, barring a miracle, Leoni is expected to be out for the rest of the season.

Following the devastating news of his season-ending injury, Leoni wrote on his official Instagram account, "I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me during this difficult time."

"This wasn't the result I had always dreamed of on my debut, but I will do my best to get back playing on this amazing field as soon as possible. Thank you so much!"

With Leoni confirmed to be out for the season due to a ACL rupture, Liverpool reserves defender Rhys Williams is expected to get another chance to play for the first team after three-years.

Meanwhile, youth academy wonderkid Amara Nallo could also be promoted to the first-team ahead of schedule.

Leoni made his debut in Liverpool's recent Carabao Cup match against Southampton.

However, in the 81st minute, Leoni accidentally fell to the touchline while intercepting the ball in his own half. Minutes later, he was stretchered off the pitch by medical staff, a heartbreaking end to his debut for the reigning Premier League champions.
