Chris Richards: I think the defense was good but we have to accept the draw

Chris Richards was proud of Crystal Palace's defensive performance in the final game of the season against Liverpool, but believes the team could have done better. The season ended in a historic match. Ismaila Sarr scored early but Mohamed Salah equalised late on as Crystal Palace snatched a point from the defending champions.

With Crystal Palace leading 1-0, Liverpool lost Ryan Gravenberch midway through the second half, as he was shown a red card by the referee for fouling Daichi Kamada. The home team continued to press and create chances. Dean Henderson was outstanding in front of goal, but Mohamed Salah's goal in the 84th minute forced Crystal Palace to accept a draw.

For Chris Richards, it was very difficult to end the game in this way. Chris Richards said: "This goal laid a solid foundation for us. No matter what stage of the season we are in, the opponent is always a strong team. But leading the defending champion 1-0 always gives us a morale boost."

"We defended with all our strength and tried to take advantage of our chances, but in the end the opponent equalized the score and the game ended. Even though they had one player sent off, they still felt more manly. In any case, our players completed their task."

"I think we made some mistakes but we ended up drawing 1-1 with the champions. The result could have been better but we will go into the end of the season with this feeling."

Chris Richards says his Crystal Palace team-mates are grateful to the Premier League champions for the guard of honour they gave them before kick-off in recognition of their historic FA Cup triumph last weekend.

"Of course I think we should have had a guard of honour but they did it for us which was really great," he said. "We are very grateful and I think it is a well-deserved honour for both clubs."
