Premier League club Liverpool announced the death of former player Willie Stevenson. The midfielder, who had made great contributions to Liverpool in the 1960s, passed away recently at the age of 85.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Stevenson was an important member of Liverpool's golden age in the 1960s. He was signed by legendary manager Bill Shankly from Glasgow Rangers in October 1962 and quickly established himself at Anfield.

As a technically excellent left midfielder, Stevenson played 241 games for the team and scored 18 goals. Stevenson won the English Premier League championship with the team in 1964 and 1966, and helped the team win the FA Cup trophy for the first time in 1965, writing an important page in Liverpool's history.

It is worth mentioning that Stevenson scored a crucial penalty in the 1965 FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea, securing Liverpool's ticket to Wembley. In 1966, Stevenson also led the team to the European Cup Winners' Cup final and eventually won the runner-up.

Stevenson's last game for Liverpool was in November 1967. Three days before his debut, he made a brilliant farewell at Anfield, scoring a penalty to beat Wolves in a 2-1 victory. After leaving the club, Stevenson moved to Stoke City, and then played for Tranmere Rovers, Vancouver Whitecaps, Limerick and Macclesfield Town before hanging up his boots.

Recalling his playing career, Stevenson once humbly said: "I just hope that everyone thinks I am a good player and I have done my best for the club. I love playing for Liverpool. I am very lucky to win the Scottish Cup, the Scottish League, the FA Cup and two league titles with Liverpool."
