According to GiveMeSport, American midfielder Frankie Amaya will join Los Angeles Football Club on loan in the 2025 season, ending his two-year stay with Toluca in the Mexican Football League. He played only twice for Diablos Rojos in the 2025 spring league, with a total playing time of only 23 minutes, and then never entered the first team roster again.
The UCLA midfielder joined Toluca from the New York Red Bulls in the summer of 2024 for a transfer fee of $3.5 million and was seen by the club as a long-term investment. However, he has never been able to fully adapt to the rhythm of Mexican football and his performance has gradually declined. He still had some opportunities to play under Portuguese coach Renato Paiva, but with the appointment of Argentine coach Turco Mohamed, Amaya completely faded out of the team's plan.
It is worth mentioning that although Toluca ranked first in the regular season and will participate in the Liguria Cup from May 7th to 8th, the club still announced Amaya's decision to leave the team in advance, making it clear that he will not participate in the playoffs, or even be a rotation or substitute option.
Looking back at Amaya's career trajectory, he gave up the remaining three years of college eligibility and was selected by FC Cincinnati as the No. 1 pick in the MLS draft. After playing 43 games, he transferred to the New York Red Bulls. During his time with the Red Bulls, he made a total of 104 appearances and scored 8 goals, making a considerable contribution.
The 24-year-old Amaya returns to MLS and joins Los Angeles Football Club, which is ranked seventh in the Western Conference. The team currently has 13 points, with a record of 4 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses. This Sunday, they will face St. Louis City Football Club in the 10th round.
