Guadalajara signs Gabriel Milito as new coach

Mexican giants Guadalajara have finally finalized their new head coach. Argentine coach Gabriel Milito will officially lead the team on a new journey at the start of the summer of 2025. According to multiple sources, the former Barcelona defender has signed a two-year contract with the club.

According to well-known transfer expert César Luis Merlo, Guadalajara quickly raised its offer after being rejected by Milito earlier, and finally succeeded in convincing the 44-year-old Argentine to take over. Milito was also concerned by Boca Juniors, but he finally chose Guadalajara, which is in a deeper reconstruction period and has greater challenges.

Milito took office at a time when the club was in turmoil. The team performed poorly in the 2025 spring league, not only failing to make the playoffs, but also failing to qualify for the play-offs, which led to the dismissal of then-coach Gerardo Espinosa.

After a series of fruitless negotiations, Guadalajara finally welcomed a new helmsman - Milito, a coach known for his tactical discipline and structured play. He took over the coaching position this time, not only to lead the team to achieve a breakthrough in performance, but also to shoulder the responsibility of reshaping the team's style and culture.

The team has started pre-season preparations this week. Milito will make his official debut in the next few days and join the team training. All contract details are being finalized.

As a head coach, Milito has extensive coaching experience. He has coached the student team, Independiente and Argentina Youth in Argentina, coached O'Higgins in Chile, and led Atletico Mineiro in Brazil to win the Mineiro State League Championship in 2024. This time joining Guadalajara will be his first time to set foot in Mexican football.

According to the schedule, Guadalajara will face the New York Red Bulls in the first match of the UEFA Cup group stage on July 31, and will then face Charlotte FC and Cincinnati FC.
