Sunderland manager Regis Le Brice expressed regret over his team's overall performance after their narrow penalty shootout defeat to Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup.
Le Brice made a complete 11-man change to the starting lineup. Huddersfield Town took the early lead, but Sunderland improved in the second half, with on-loan Spanish striker Marc Giu scoring a header on his debut to equalize.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw in regular time and was forced into a penalty shootout. Although all 11 penalties were successful, Aleksic's penalty was saved by Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Nicholls, and Sunderland ultimately failed to advance.
After the game, Le Bris admitted to being disappointed with the result: "We wanted to win. The rhythm was not good in the first half, and the opponent scored a wonderful goal. But in the second half, the team responded more strongly and played better. We provided many players with valuable playing time, which is good for the future."
Talking about Giuille's first goal, Le Bris believes it means a lot to Giuille: "This will give him confidence and allow him to accumulate experience in cooperating with his teammates. This is a good start."
Although they failed to win, Le Bris believes in the team and believes that the competitiveness and team gains shown in this game will provide positive impetus for Sunderland's upcoming schedule.
