Licencio Somerville set to return to West Ham United first-team squad

After missing almost the entire season, West Ham United winger No.7 Chrisencio Somerville is finally on track to return.

The 23-year-old Dutch player scored a key goal against Manchester United in October 2024, winning cheers from fans and making people look forward to his new season.

However, just a few months later, Somerville unfortunately pulled his hamstring in the FA Cup match against Aston Villa in January 2025. He was forced to leave the field less than halfway after starting the game. He then underwent surgery in April and bid farewell to the entire season early.

Despite the physical inconvenience caused by the injury, Somerville admitted that the greater challenge came from the psychological level. In the past few months, he had to train alone and implement a dedicated recovery plan, unable to synchronize with the team.

Recently, Somerville was interviewed and said: "What I miss most is not just playing football, but also the daily training and lunch with my brothers. I like that kind of collective atmosphere, and I was once isolated."

Somerville is very grateful for the support of those around him, which helped him stay stable mentally: "My people have supported me a lot during this time, and they pushed me forward. Sometimes it's not me who decides when I can come back, but when my body is ready. But I always tell myself that waiting may be a greater blessing."

Currently, Somerville has traveled with the team to the Black Forest in Germany to participate in the pre-season training camp. Although he will miss the team's trip to the United States due to rehabilitation arrangements, he is optimistic about his recovery progress.

Somerville is eager for the 2025/26 season: "I feel like a new player because I didn't have much chance to show myself last season. I don't feel like I need to prove anything and I don't feel any pressure."

"I know what I'm capable of, so I just want the fans and the world to see the real Crisencio Somerville. When I get back, it will be showtime."
