Lyon announced on its official website on Thursday that the club has renewed the contract of Angola international defender Clinton Mata.

According to Lyon's official statement, Mata has signed on a new three-year deal which runs until the summer of 2028.

About Clinton Mata

Clinton Mata, 32, was born on November 7, 1992, in Verviers, Belgium. He is 1.80 meters tall and primarily plays center back, but can also play right back or right midfield. He holds dual Belgian and Angolan citizenship.

Mata played for the youth academy of Sporting Visé as a child before joining Eupen's youth academy in 2010 and completed his Eupen first-team debut by coming on as a substitute in February 2012.

After leaving the club when his contract had expired in the summer of 2014, Mata joined Royal Charleroi on a free transfer.

In August 2017, Mata was loaned-out to Genk. During this time, he helped the club reach the Belgian Cup final.

The following July, Mata moved to Club Brugge for €1 million.

During his five-year spell at Club Brugge, Mata won the Jupiler Pro League twice and the Belgian Super Cup twice.

In July 2023, Mata joined Lyon for €5 million.

Since joining Les Gones, Mata has made 73 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 powerhouse so far, providing seven assists and reaching the Coupe de France final once with the club.
