Manchester United defender Jonny Evans announces retirement

Manchester United officially announced that the club's legendary defender Jonny Evans has officially ended his 20-year professional playing career and will take on the role of head of loan and promotion paths, starting a new coaching career.

Evans is currently completing the UEFA A-level coaching license course. In the future, he will be responsible for the loan arrangements for Manchester United's young players and work closely with football director Jason Wilcox and youth training director to optimise the player growth mechanism and pave a clear path for the next generation of Manchester United stars to be promoted to the first team.

The appointment also means that Evans officially hangs up his boots, ending his brilliant playing career. He came from Manchester United's youth training camp and played 241 games in two phases at the club, winning three Premier League titles, one Champions League trophy, one FA Cup and two League Cups.

Evans has played a total of 536 official games in his career, played for five clubs including Manchester United, Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City, and has played 107 times for the Northern Ireland national team. He was awarded the Medal of the British Empire (MBE) in 2023.

When announcing his retirement, Evans said: "I am not leaving my playing career with regret, but with pride and gratitude. I thank all the coaches, teammates, staff who have worked with me, and the fans who have always supported me. It is the honor of my life to represent Manchester United and play for Northern Ireland."

“As a player who has been on loan, I know how important it is for growth. I hope to help more young people find their own way to success and continue Manchester United’s proud tradition of academy training.”
