Messi: Today is my last home game, I look forward to participating in the 2026 World Cup

Argentina legend Lionel Messi said on Thursday he still holds out hope of playing in the 2026 World Cup.

The 38-year-old Messi has played 194 times for Argentina, scoring 114 goals and providing 61 assists, leading his team to the 2022 World Cup and the 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles. With his two goals against Venezuela, he now leads the South American World Cup qualifying scoring list with eight goals, and his three assists put him tied for fourth place in assists.

After the game, Messi said in an interview: "This is my last time to fight for points at home, and I have mixed feelings. I have experienced many things on this court, some happy and some not so good, but it is always a happy thing to play in front of the fans-especially after winning. Over the years, we have enjoyed one game after another, and I am very happy."

"It's always been my dream to end this way. I received so much love in Barcelona, and I still do... but I'd love to receive the same recognition and blessings in my home country, in front of my compatriots. There's been so much criticism over the years, but I only want to remember the good parts and the team that fought so hard but couldn't win. Fate ultimately favored me, and a few of my teammates as well."

When asked if he had decided to participate in the next World Cup, Messi admitted: "Logically, I didn't think I would play in the next World Cup. But now that the opportunity has come, I am still full of expectations and desire. As I always say, I will focus on the present and work hard one game at a time."

He concluded: "What is certain is that today is my last game at home for points. From now on, I will focus on adjusting my condition every day and be honest with myself. If I feel good, I will enjoy the game; if I am not in good shape, I would rather choose to withdraw, otherwise I will struggle. Let's wait and see."
