Morocco's national team coach, Regragui, has announced his resignation, and Mohamed Wahebi will succeed him.

Walid Regragui officially confirmed on Thursday that he has resigned as head coach of the Moroccan national team.

During his playing career, Regragui played for clubs such as Toulouse, Ajaccio, Racing Santander, Dijon, and Grenoble. After retiring in 2012, he chose to transition into coaching. He initially served as an assistant coach for the Moroccan national team, and since 2014, he has managed FUS Rabat, Al-Duhail, and Vidad.

In August 2022, Regragui succeeded Waheed Halilhodžić as the head coach of the Morocco national team. He also led the Morocco team to a historic semi-final appearance at the Qatar World Cup that same year, becoming the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup.

To date, Regragui has coached 49 international matches, achieving a record of 36 wins, 8 draws, and 5 losses. He also led his team to the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Morocco, but ultimately lost to Senegal and finished as runners-up.

At the press conference, Regragui explained his decision to leave in detail: "The team needs a new face, a different energy, and a fresh perspective from a new manager. I sincerely believe that the team needs a new vision to make progress. I chose to leave in the best interests of the team."

As for Regragui's successor, the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has already made its decision. They appointed 49-year-old Mohamed Al-Wahbi as the national team coach, with João Sacramento assisting him.

This appointment to the Moroccan national team will mark Wahibi's first time independently managing the first team. He previously worked in youth academy and as an assistant coach at Royal Anderlecht, and has been in charge of the Moroccan youth team since 2022.

Speaking about the appointment, Moroccan Football Federation President Fouzi Lekaya said, "This is not a simple personnel change, but a strategic transformation. Our goal is to uphold the vision and wisdom of the Royal Family to continue to promote the development of Moroccan football and to closely link the national team, youth teams and women's team."

"With the arrival of Mohamed Wabi and several other top reinforcements, we will further enhance the team's overall level and daily standards based on a spirit of harmony and complementarity. 'Morocco 2030' is an exciting vision: our goal is to continue to consolidate Morocco's position among the world's leading nations and achieve great results this summer and in 2030."

Regragi added, “I am very honored to have the trust of the Moroccan Football Federation. We will work with high standards and humility, relying on a clear tactical system and common goals to continuously improve in every game, and set high standards in daily training so that the team can achieve breakthroughs in the upcoming games and live up to the expectations of His Majesty the King and the Moroccan people.”
