After goals from Depay, Van Dijk, Xavi Simons, Malen, Noah Long and Van der Ven, the Netherlands defeated Malta 8-0 in the fourth round of the European Group G of the 2024/25 World Cup qualifiers. Van Dijk said he hopes the team will continue to be a difficult opponent and achieve good results in the future.
After winning two consecutive games, the Netherlands currently ranks second in Group G with 6 points. In the fifth round of the game in September, the Netherlands will host Poland at home.
Dutch captain Van Dijk, who plays for Liverpool, said, "This is a wonderful day. The team scored a lot of goals. We kept a clean sheet again and it's time for the team to take a break. The most important task for our national team is to get 6 points. Now the goal has been achieved. This is indeed a long season."
"We hope good things are brewing but we have to perform in every game. Now the task is to wait until September and keep going. That's what we are working towards."
Van Dijk also said, "I always think we have a very good lineup. I have felt the atmosphere off the court a long time ago, but we need to rebuild that tacit understanding through the game on the court, and we must become a team that every opponent finds difficult to deal with. There is still a long way to go before the World Cup, but this is already a good start."
It is worth mentioning that the 31-year-old Dutch striker Depay has scored 50 goals in his national team career, tying the goal record of Dutch legend Van Persie.
Speaking of his teammate Depay, Van Dijk said, "Depay plays an extremely important role in the team. He is now tied with Van Persie for first place, which is a great thing, and I know how much effort he has put in for this goal."
"He's a very important part of our team and I'm very proud of him, but we can't stop here and have to keep moving forward."
