The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP)'s Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion (DNCG) announced on its official website on Tuesday that Lyon was officially administratively relegated to Ligue 2 due to poor financial problems.
According to the DNCG's official statement, the authorities had warned the clib in November last year that if the club's financial situation was not improved before the end of last season, the provisional suspension of Lyon's administrative relegation to Ligue 2 would be implemented. After repeated supervision, DNCG now confirmed that the club's administrative relegation will be enforced, and Lyon has the right to appeal within 7 days.
At the same time, DNCG also announced that it would not take action against the problems faced by Monaco, Nantes and newly promoted Paris FC.
However, Lyon firmly expressed its dissatisfaction with the verdict and slammed the action taken by DNCG as "incomprehensible."
Lyon responded in an official statement: "Olympique Lyonnais Football Club has noted the incomprehensible decision made by DNCG tonight and confirmed that it will appeal immediately."
"We have strong financial resources and brilliant sporting achievements, and have won the qualification for European competitions for two consecutive years. We really can't understand how such a great French club can be relegated by an administrative decision."
It is worth mentioning that Lyon has become the fourth club to be administratively relegated by DNCG in recent years.
Last year, Bordeaux was administratively relegated to the non-league due to its alarming debt problems. Earlier, Sochaux and Nancy were also administratively relegated to the French third division due to financial problems.
This decision of DNCG is a double whammy for Lyon's owner, American businessman John Textor.
Prior to this, Crystal Palace was also thoroughly investigated by UEFA because Textor co-own its shares.
Although the Eagles won the FA Cup last season and qualified for the Europa League, Textor's special status has been identified as having possible conflict of interest.
Last month, FIFA removed Club León of their qualification to the FIFA Club World Cup for violating the Multi-Club Ownership Rulesas it was owned by the same owner as Pachuca.
Later, UEFA also announced that it would follow its footsteps and consider removing the Eagles from their qualification to the Europa League on the basis that Lyon's final position in the league talbe is higher than Crystal Palace.
In addition, a few hours before the DNCG announced the administrative relegation of Lyon, Textor had just announced that it had sold his 43% stake in Crystal Palace to another American businessman to help the Premier League club pass the Europa League qualification removal issue.
Unexpectedly, this happened again now. Whether UEFA will remove the seven-time Ligue 1 champions of their qualification to the Europa League remains to be seen.
