Lyon officially announced on Thursday that Algerian right winger Rashid Ghazal has joined Lyon on a free transfer after leaving Rizespor. The two parties have signed a one-year contract valid until June 30, 2026.
With the signing of his contract, Ghezzal's second season with Lyon began. Born in Lyon, France, the 33-year-old holds dual French and Algerian citizenship. He joined Lyon's youth academy at the age of 12 and made his professional debut for the first team in the Europa League on October 4, 2012.
Ghazal then played for Lyon for five seasons, making 119 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 20 assists, winning a French Super Cup. Since leaving Lyon in 2017, he has played for Monaco, Leicester City, Fiorentina, Beşiktaş, and Rizespor, winning one Turkish Super League title, two Turkish Cups, and one Turkish Super Cup with Beşiktaş.
Ghazal's joy at returning to Lyon after eight years was palpable. In an official interview with the club, he said: "I am incredibly proud to have been given the opportunity to return to Lyon. At the moment I signed, I felt like the little boy who signed his first professional contract. Returning to Lyon brings me mixed feelings, and I'm incredibly happy."
“I hope to maintain a high level of performance on the field and help the team, coaching staff and club achieve their goals. At the same time, I also hope to play the role of a core player and patriarch in the locker room, guiding the young players and leading their growth together with Corentin Tolisso, Clinton Mata, Moussa Carter and Nicola Tagliafico.”
