Newly promoted La Liga side Real Oviedo announced on Thursday that they have parted ways with 48-year-old Serbian coach Veljko Paunovic.

The announcement read: "Real Oviedo Club expresses its sincere gratitude to Veljko Paunovic and his coaching team for the professionalism, dedication and professionalism they have demonstrated during their tenure. Under his leadership, Oviedo achieved its long-cherished goal and was successfully promoted to La Liga. This historic achievement will forever be engraved in the memories of Oviedo fans. The club wishes him all the best in his future personal and professional career."

Panovich officially took over as Real Oviedo manager in March of this year, with his term originally scheduled to end in June of next year. In three months, he led the team to an impressive record of nine wins, four draws, and one loss, ultimately securing their return to La Liga after a 24-year absence via the promotion playoffs.

However, Oviedo's start to the season has been less than ideal. They have lost to Villarreal, Real Madrid, Getafe, Elche, Barcelona, and Levante, finishing 17th in La Liga with a record of 2 wins, 6 losses, and 6 points. Paunovic became the first manager to be sacked in La Liga this season, and his entourage will also leave.

Oviedo has already made a clear decision on Panovic's successor, inviting 46-year-old Luis Carrión to return as manager on a contract that runs until June 30, 2026.

Carrión coached Oviedo in the 2023/2024 season, during which time he led the team to a record of 20 wins, 11 draws and 11 losses. They were just one step away from promotion to the Superliga, but ultimately lost to Espanyol and failed to advance.

Besides Oviedo, Carrion has also coached Espanyol Women, Córdoba, Melilla, Numancia, Cartagena, and Las Palmas. According to Transfermarkt, his overall record in La Liga is 3 draws and 6 losses.
