Porter is interested in taking over Sweden's managerial role after Tomasson's dismissal

The Swedish Football Association has officially announced the dismissal of head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson due to the team's poor performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Former Chelsea and West Ham United manager Graham Potter has publicly stated that if given the opportunity, he would be willing to become the head coach of the Swedish national team.

Thomasson took over as Sweden's first foreign head coach in February 2024. The former Danish international managed Sweden, who finished last in Group B with just one draw and three losses in four World Cup qualifiers.

Sweden's hopes of advancing to the next round were all but over after they lost 1-0 to Kosovo at home on Monday. Despite boasting a formidable attacking line-up featuring Liverpool striker Alexander Isak and Arsenal striker Viktor Čikereš, the team struggled to find a winning rhythm.

The president of the Swedish Football Association said in a statement: "The team has not achieved the results we expected. We still have a chance to advance through the play-offs in March next year, so we must create the best conditions for the team. We believe that new leadership is now needed to lead the team forward."

At the same time, Potter, who has coached Brighton, Chelsea and West Ham United, recently revealed in an interview with Swedish media that he currently lives in Sweden and is open to coaching the national team.

In the interview, Potter said: "I am now at home in Sweden, just left the Premier League. I am open to any opportunity that can help me. Being the head coach of the Swedish national team is an excellent job."

"I love this country and Swedish football and I'm grateful for it. If I get the opportunity, it would be a great challenge."

Porter coached the Swedish club Östersund from 2011 to 2018, leading the team from the fourth level all the way to European competitions and was deeply loved by local fans.
