Cesc Fabregas, 37, is a strong contender for the RB Leipzig job, Sky Sports Germany reported on Thursday.
RB Leipzig's performance this season did not meet expectations. After 28 rounds, they ranked fifth in the Bundesliga with 12 wins, 9 draws and 7 losses and 45 points. They also performed poorly in the Champions League, and finally ranked fifth from the bottom with 3 points.
On March 30, local time, RB Leipzig announced that coach Marco Rose was officially dismissed. They then appointed 45-year-old Hungarian Jolt Loew to temporarily take over the team while starting to look for a new coach.
Fabregas played for Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea, Monaco and Como as a player, and won 1 Club World Cup, 1 UEFA Cup, 1 UEFA Super Cup, 1 La Liga, 1 Copa del Rey, 2 Spanish Super Cups, 2 Premier Leagues, 2 FA Cups, 1 League Cup and 1 Community Shield. He also represented the Spanish national team 110 times, winning 1 World Cup (2010) and 2 European Cups (2008, 2012).
After retiring in July 2023, Fabregas began his coaching career at Como U19. He has been promoted to head coach of Como's first team since July 2024. So far, he has led the team to 8 wins, 9 draws and 15 losses, ranking 13th in Serie A with 33 points.
Sky Sports Germany further pointed out that in addition to Fabregas, potential candidates for the new head coach of RB Leipzig include Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace, Danny Roll of Sheffield Wednesday and former Benfica coach Roger Schmidt. As for St. Pauli coach Alexander Blessing, Jeddah National coach Matthias Jaisler and Brentford coach Thomas Frank, they are not currently the actual candidates for the next head coach of RB Leipzig.
