Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool performed well in winning possession.

Liverpool secured a 3-0 victory over Marseille in the seventh round of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League, thanks to goals from Szoboszlai, Gakpo, and an own goalkeeper. Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk praised the Reds' performance in winning possession and urged his teammates to focus on restoring their fitness for the next round.

Hungarian star Szoboszlai scored a free kick late in the first half to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead. In the 72nd minute of the second half, Frimpong received the ball and crossed it, but Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net while attempting to clear it, extending Liverpool's lead to 2-0.

In stoppage time of the second half, Gakopo received a diagonal pass from Hrafinbech and slotted the ball home, extending Liverpool's lead to 3-0.

Liverpool ultimately secured a comfortable 3-0 away victory against Marseille. With four wins and one loss in their last five Champions League matches, Liverpool currently sit fourth in the standings with 15 points.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk said, "For me, it's always very difficult to play against De Zerby's teams. If we're not proactive enough in the game, or if we're a half-step slower in pressing, they can easily build attacks from the back."

“They will stick to their style of play and continue to take risks and attack forward. So if we can win possession between the two lines, there will be a lot of space to exploit, and I think we did a pretty good job in that regard. Overall, I think we performed very well, which is a foundation that can be further consolidated and improved. Next, we will get back into form and then move on.”

Van Dijk said, "Everyone gives their all, that's how it's supposed to be when you play for Liverpool. And the atmosphere in this environment is fantastic. This is my first time playing in this stadium, and I've been really looking forward to it. The atmosphere here is really great."

When asked if this victory could be seen as an opportunity to extend winning streak, Van Dijk said, "I think we say that after every win or good result. For us, the most important thing now is to focus on recovery and then we have to go to Bournemouth away, which is a very tough team to play against."

"To me, this is a team that plays wonderful football, and the coach is excellent, so we must be fully prepared. But from now on, all our attention will be focused on recovery."
