Tottenham Hotspur officially announced on Friday that they have completed a contract extension with Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, which is reportedly set to run from 2026 to June 30, 2029.
Commenting on Bentancur's contract extension, Tottenham manager Thomas Frank said: "I'm delighted that Rodrigo has committed his future to the club. This shows his confidence in what we are building here and that we are embarking on an extraordinary journey."
Frank also spoke highly of Bentancur: "Rodrigo is an important part of the journey. He is an excellent midfielder who can control the tempo of the game and is the core link that unites the team. He also has the ability to attack the penalty area, create chances and score goals."
The 28-year-old Bentancur, a graduate of Boca Juniors' youth academy, made his senior debut in the Copa Libertadores on April 10, 2015. He won two Argentine Primera titles and one Copa Argentina with Boca Juniors before signing for Juventus in 2017 for €23.5 million.
In the four and a half seasons that he played for Juventus, Bentancur contributed 3 goals and 18 assists in 181 games across all competitions, winning 3 Serie A titles, 2 Italian Cup titles and 2 Italian Super Cup titles with the team.
In January 2022, Bentancur transferred to Tottenham for €19 million. To date, he has made 122 appearances for Tottenham, scoring 9 goals and providing 8 assists, and won the 2024/25 Europa League with the team.
After completing the contract extension, Bentancur said: "I feel very good and I am happy to continue writing my story at a great club."
"My family is also very happy. I am surrounded by a group of great and hardworking friends and teammates. I love the club and feel very good here."
"Winning the Europa League was a fantastic moment. We want to build on this and continue to win more trophies."
"We have a new manager and a new captain and I hope to spend more quality time at the club."
