Lewis Hall admits he can't wait to get back on the court

Lewis Hall missed last season's game due to a foot injury and is currently accelerating his recovery. The England international admitted that the recovery process was extremely difficult, but he always maintained a positive attitude and looked forward to the 2025-26 season full of hope and challenges.

The player was a key new star for Newcastle United but, on the advice of a specialist, he underwent surgery and missed Newcastle United's crucial Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool and the remaining 11 league games of the season, as Eddie Howe's side qualified for the Champions League.

Lewis Hall initially walked with the help of crutches and then changed to a protective boot. But he has spent most of the summer on the training ground working closely with the club's medical team. This week, he has started outdoor running and is expected to gradually resume light training with the ball in the coming days.

In an interview, Lewis Hall said: "I am recovering step by step. I have just completed 12 weeks of non-weight-bearing training. It is indeed a long process. But from then until now, I feel very good. I have always had a limp when I walked before, so it takes time to adapt again. But now I feel that I am gradually recovering. This is a gradual accumulation process."

Lewis Hall underwent surgery to repair a broken foot four months ago, which has kept him out of the team by 34 games this season and has hampered his progress towards international honours.

He continued: “Once I got back here, I took off the cast and stitches and went straight into the altitude training chamber. While I was sitting there, I was just using my arms to get my heart rate up, and every night my arms would go numb. After that, I slowly started to use my feet and legs again.”

“Since I have been doing a lot of aerobic training indoors, the current training intensity does not make me feel tired. I just need to gradually increase the training load. Mentally, outdoor training makes me feel very good. Seeing other teammates participating in pre-season training is very exciting. It feels like I am back on the training ground again.”

“In the first few weeks, I struggled with big events like finals. I played in all the games up to that point but missed that one. I was so proud of the club and everyone in it, but it was hard not being able to celebrate in person. It was probably my lowest point, not so much not playing as not being able to celebrate with my teammates. I could only watch from home and it was a tough time for me.”

“There are good days and bad days in life, some days I feel so positive, but when I sit on the sidelines like I did on match days, I feel like I’m missing out. After everything I’ve been through, it’s been great to be back out there and see hope ahead.”

Lewis Hall still needs to complete a lot of training before returning to the field, but he hopes to be back in full training form before the end of the preseason and compete in the first game of the new season.

He said: "With any injury, especially a long-term injury, the recovery process is unpredictable. Some athletes recover faster, while others take longer, it all depends on the specific recovery situation. For me, the most important thing is to stay healthy and ready to play in the first game of the season. To this end, I hope to participate in a few pre-season games to ensure that I am in the best condition."

Lewis Hall has received caring messages from his manager and team, which have been very heartwarming and encouraging. During his recovery, physiotherapists Alex Ronaldson and Nathan Lin and fitness coach Sean Miller have worked closely with him, while head of physiotherapy Sean Beech and club doctor Paul Catterson have also supported him throughout his recovery.

He continued: "The whole medical team came together to put together a recovery plan for me and they all helped in different ways. Alex and Nathan looked after me every day, especially when I was feeling down, and they are two of the people I am most grateful to. And of course Sean, because I work closely with them every day."

"A lot of my teammates have tried to make me feel part of the team. For example, Jam Lascelles, even though he has returned to training, he checks in on me every day, and Sven Portman does the same. They keep in touch with me every day, asking how I'm feeling and showing a lot of interest in my recovery process. Details like this really help me a lot."

"There are still a lot of things to look forward to, like the Champions League and international matches, but the fact is that I haven't played a competitive match for a long time.

"It's hard to put it into words, but I feel so much support from the people at the club. In a way, though, sometimes you feel overlooked, even though I only missed 11 league games. It makes me want to get back out there and prove myself again and show everyone what I can do for the team. I want to get back to the level I was at before the injury, and even get stronger and better. I can't wait to get back on the pitch."
