Ligue 1 legendary striker Bernard Lacombe dies at the age of 72

Ligue 1 legendary striker Bernard Lacombe died of illness on Tuesday evening local time at the age of 72. Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Bordeaux all confirmed his death through statements.
Lyon said in a statement: "It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Bernard Lacombe on Tuesday evening. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, relatives, friends and all those who love Lyon and football."
"Goodbye, Bernard. You are our legend, the greatest being."
Saint-Etienne said: "Bernard Lacombe, who played for Saint-Etienne for one season, has left us forever. As a legend of the neighboring team that we are happy to compete with, he will always witness the rivalry between the generations."
"Saint Etienne extends its sincerest condolences to his relatives."
Bordeaux also issued a statement saying: "It is with deep sadness that Bernard Lacombe has passed away at the age of 72."
"This legendary striker played for Bordeaux between 1979 and 1987. With his extraordinary talent and selfless dedication, he left a strong mark in the club's history. Today, all members of Bordeaux mourn this elegant and graceful striker who will always stand among the greatest players in the club's history. Thank you, Bernard."
Bernard Lacombe started his professional career in 1969, playing for Lyon, Saint-Étienne and Bordeaux. He made 592 appearances at the club level, scoring 304 goals and providing 1 assist, winning three Ligue 1 titles and three French Cups with the team.
With 255 league goals, Lacombe became the second-highest scorer in Ligue 1 history after Dériônez (299 goals).
As for the national team, Lacombe played 38 times for the French team, scored 12 goals and provided 4 assists, and won the 1984 European Cup with the team.
In July 1987, Lacombe ended his 18-year playing career. He then returned to Lyon as sports director, first-team coach, and chairman's advisor until he officially retired in December 2019.
