Liverpool defeated 10-men Newcastle United with a 2-3 away win at St. James' Park on Monday on matchday 2 of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

In the first half, Gravenberch scored with a long shot, and Gordon received a red card for a diving tackle on Van Dijk. In the second half, Ekitike volleyed into the net, Guimarães scored with a header, and Osula volleyed into an open net. In a crucial moment, Ngumoha scored with a powerful shot. Ultimately, Liverpool defeated 10-men Newcastle United with a 2-3 away win. Following this round of matches, the Reds temporarily moved up to third place on the table with six points; the Magpies are currently 15th with one point.

First Half

In the 28th minute, Harvey Barnes crossed into the box from the left wing. Anthony Gordon rose high and attempted with a header in the box, however his effort went just slightly over the crossbar.

7 minutes later, Cody Gakpo passes horizontally from the left wing. Ryan Gravenberch took the ball and took a few steps before firing a right-footed long shot from outside the penalty area. His shot was blocked by Fabian Schär, hit the post, and then ricocheted into the bottom left corner of the net, leaving Nick Pope with no time to react! Liverpool broke the deadlock to take a 0-1 lead!

In the 45th minute, while clearing the ball in his own back half, Virgil van Dijk was tackled by Gordon, who was pressing him. The referee immediately blew his whistle and personally walked to the sidelines to review the VAR video. After confirming that Gordon's foul was too serious, he gave him a red card on the spot! Newcastle United was forced to finish the game with 10-men!

At the end of the first half, Newcastle United trailed Liverpool 0-1 going into the half-time break.

Second Half

Both sides switched sides as the match continued. In the 46th minute, Liverpool launched a deadly counterattack. After intercepting the ball, Gakpo passes horizontally from the front. Hugo Ekitike quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, volleyed the ball with his right foot from the center of the box. The ball hit the bottom left corner of the post and ricocheted into the bottom right corner, extending Liverpool's lead to 0-2! This was the third goal in three consecutive games for the striker, who Newcastle United had failed to acquire this summer.

In the 57th minute, Tino Livramento crossed into the box from the left wing. Bruno Guimarães headed the ball into the net over Milos Kerkez's back, bringing Newcastle United back to 1-2.

In the 88th minute, Newcastle United had a crucial free kick opportunity, and Pope took the kick from his own back half by launching it with an accurate long pass. After successfully beating the offside trap, William Osula quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, volleyed the ball into the empty bottom left corner of the net past the outrushing Alisson from the left side of the box with his left foot, Newcastle United equalizes Liverpool with a 2-2 draw!

In the 10th minute of injury time, Mohamed Salah  passes horizontally from the right wing. Rio Ngumoha quickly followed up and upon receiving the pass, strucked the ball into the bottom right corner with a powerful right-footed shot from the center of the box, securing Liverpool's 2-3 victory. At just 16 years and 361 days old, Ngumoha broke the record to become the fourth youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, as well as surpassing Harvey Elliott's record as the Reds' youngest goalscorer!

When the final whistle is blown, Liverpool defeated 10-men Newcastle United with a 2-3 away win.
