Klinsmann says Pochettino needs time to get used to US soccer

Klinsmann stressed that Pochettino needs time to familiarize himself with the American football environment in order to truly unleash the team's potential.

The United States national team has faced some criticism for its two consecutive defeats in the recent CONCACAF Nations League, but former USMNT boss Jurgen Klinsmann said he believes the Argentine can lead the team to success, especially ahead of the 2026 World Cup on home soil.

"I think it's been a difficult learning curve for Mauricio and his entire coaching staff," Klinsmann, who coached the U.S. team between 2011 and 2016, said in an interview.

"Because the soccer ecosystem in the U.S. is completely different from Europe, or even South America or Argentina, which he is familiar with. He is getting information every day, constantly learning, getting to know the players, and understanding how soccer works in this country."

"He will digest it gradually, and when the World Cup approaches, he will focus more on the most important part - that is the relationship with the players and the relationship with the team. He needs to build a special energy and motivation to lead the team to the World Cup."

"He knows very well that he has a special team," Klinsmann said. "These players are now able to compete at the highest level. They play for a Champions League team. This is incredible. This American team is at a new level."

"Now for him, it's a process of learning and understanding every day, especially the complex political structure and operating mechanism behind American soccer. It's hard to understand at the beginning, but as the big games approach, the most important thing is the trust between him and the players and the relationship between him and the core group of the national team."

"He is a very successful coach with a lot of experience and wisdom. We all hope that this can be translated into a successful World Cup."

The team's fourth-place finish in the CONCACAF Nations League has caused dissatisfaction among the outside world, with some former US internationals criticizing the team's preparations and technical and tactical arrangements. The US team will kick off its 2025 Gold Cup journey on June 14, with two warm-up matches scheduled before the game to reorganize the lineup and restore confidence.
