Liverpool are close to signing Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jérémy Frimpong, Fabrizio Romano reported on Saturday.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold set to leave this summer, Liverpool are in urgent need of strengthening their right-back position. Although they have renewed their contract with Connor Bradley until 2029, they still prefer to look for another starting player.

After many considerations, Liverpool finally selected Frimpong as the right-back reinforcement. Frimpong's contract with Leverkusen contains a 35 million euro release clause, and Liverpool will directly pay the amount to complete the transfer.

Romano also learned that the two sides will sign a five-year contract. Liverpool has also arranged for Frimpong to undergo a medical examination.

The 24-year-old Frimpong came from Manchester City's youth training and made his professional debut for Celtic on September 25, 2019. He played for Celtic for two years, scoring 3 goals and providing 8 assists in 51 games in all lines, and won the Scottish Premier League championship, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup with the team.

In January 2021, Frimpong joined Leverkusen from Celtic for 11 million euros. He mainly played as a right winger and right back in Leverkusen. So far, he has made 190 appearances, contributed 30 goals and 44 assists, and won 1 Bundesliga championship, 1 German Cup championship and 1 German Super Cup championship with the team.

As for the national team, Frimpong has represented the Netherlands since October 2023. He has made 12 appearances so far, scoring 1 goal and providing 2 assists.
