Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame coach George Raveling has died of cancer at the age of 88, his family announced Tuesday.

The obituary read: "It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved coach, George Henry Raveling. He faced cancer with extraordinary courage and grace, and passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, love, faith, and divine protection at the age of 88."

"No words can fully describe what George meant to his family, friends, colleagues, former players and assistants, and indeed the world. He will be deeply missed, but his aura, energy, almost godlike presence, and timeless wisdom will live on in the hearts of all whose lives he touched and whose lives he transformed."

"George was born in a segregated hospital and ultimately became a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee. Throughout his life, he never lost his zest for life, his indomitable spirit, his childlike curiosity, and his unwavering commitment to treating everyone with dignity and respect. He was a lifelong learner, a kind and beautiful soul, and he always worked tirelessly to influence others and inspire the next generation."

"Grief is the price of deep love. We are forever grateful to everyone who loved George. He cherished his family, his friends, his books, and every opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others."

George Raveling coached Washington State University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Southern California, compiling a combined record of 335 wins and 293 losses. During his tenure, he led his teams to the NCAA Championship several times and was twice selected to coach the US Olympic men's basketball team (1984, 1988).

Outside of basketball, Raveling's influence was equally profound. He facilitated Michael Jordan's signing with Nike during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, laying the foundation for the birth of the AJ brand.
