On August 7, the Boston Celtics officially announced that they had signed Max Shurga, the 57th pick in the 2025 second round, to a two-way contract. Shurga demonstrated stable playmaking and excellent defensive awareness in the Summer League, ultimately earning him a chance to enter the NBA.
The Celtics selected Shurga in the late second round of the 2025 NBA Draft and quickly added him to their Summer League roster. In five Summer League games with the Celtics, Shurga averaged 5.0 points, 3.8 assists, 1.6 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game. His game-handling and defensive judgment, demonstrated in limited playing time, earned him recognition from the coaching staff.
Despite this, Shulga still has room for improvement on the offensive end. According to statistics, his overall shooting percentage is only 24.1% , and his three-point shooting percentage is only 21.4% . Although his free throw percentage is 72.7% , the overall efficiency is low, indicating that he needs to continue to hone his shooting skills in training camp and the Development League.
Looking back at his NCAA career, Shulga averaged 15.0 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists , and 1.8 steals per game for Virginia Commonwealth University during the 2024-25 season, ultimately earning him Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year honors. His versatile game and excellent vision make him a promising backcourt player.
The Celtics have essentially completed their roster, and Shurga's addition not only provides backcourt depth but also sets the stage for future rotations. His performance in training camp and preseason games will directly determine his chances of making the NBA regular season.
