Serbia national team coach Dragan Stojkovic has officially announced his resignation following the team's 1-0 defeat to Albania at home in a World Cup qualifier.

Since taking over in 2021, Stojkovic has led Serbia to a successful qualification for the 2022 Qatar World Cup and has been praised for his offensive style of play. However, poor performances in recent matches have put the team in a slump. In September, Serbia suffered a crushing 0-5 defeat to England.

After the game, Stojkovic confirmed his decision at a press conference: "I have communicated with the president and secretary general of the Football Association and resigned. I did not expect such a defeat. As a coach, I take full responsibility and everything is my sole responsibility."

Serbia currently ranks third in Group K of the World Cup qualifiers with 7 points, England is firmly in first place with 15 points, and Albania is second with 11 points, having played one more game. If Albania successfully advances, it will be their first time in history to reach the World Cup finals.

The result also brought England one step closer to securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup. Thomas Tuchel's England national team only needs to win their next game away against Latvia to advance.

Stojković's departure marks a new period of uncertainty for the Serbian national team. Although he failed to replicate the glory of his previous career, his tenure as manager of the team, which returned to the World Cup, left a significant mark on Serbian football.
