ESPN reported Thursday, citing an obituary from the Argentine Football Federation, that legendary former Argentina international player and head coach Miguel Ángel Russo, has died of prostate cancer at the age of 69.
According to reports, Russo died at home on October 8th. Following his death, Boca Juniors, his last club, set up a memorial site for him at the Estadio Alberto J. Armando (La Bombonera).
As of press time, fans from across Argentina spontaneously visited the memorial site to leave flowers in Russo's memory. Several clubs around the world, including Real Madrid, also posted tributes.
About Miguel Ángel Russo
Born on April 9, 1956, in Valentín Alcina, Argentina, Russo was 1.75 meters tall and played as a defensive midfielder. A one-club man, his playing career consisted solely of stints with Estudiantes de La Plata, where he won two Argentine Primera División titles.
He also played 17 times for the Argentina national team between 1983 and 1985, scoring one goal.
After retiring, Russo began coaching in 1989.
As of 2024, Russo had coached Rosario Central and Boca Juniors three times, and San Lorenzo twice.
In addition, Russo also served as head coach of Salamanca in 1998 and Al-Nassr in 2021, respectively. These were the only two times in his career when he did not coach a South American club.
During his illustrious 36-year coaching career, Russo coached 1,273 games, achieving 509 wins, 371 draws, and 393 losses, with a win percentage of 39.98%. During which he has won three Argentine Primera B Nacional titles, two Argentine Primera División titles, two Copa de la Liga Profesional titles, one Copa Libertadores title, one Colombian Primera A title, and one Superliga Colombiana title.
