The league decided to fine both Atlanta Hawks forward Mouhamed Gueye and Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid $35,000 each for a physical altercation during a game, but did not impose any further suspensions.
The incident occurred on February 9th during the Timberwolves' 138-116 victory over the Hawks at home. With 11 minutes and 52 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Gaye shoved Reed from behind during a defensive play, resulting in an immediate defensive foul call.
However, the situation did not calm down. Reed immediately stepped forward to argue, and both sides quickly lost control, escalating into a violent physical confrontation, with the two gripping each other's jerseys tightly. Ultimately, it took the intervention of several assistant coaches and teammates to separate them. The referee then issued technical fouls to both players, ejecting them from the game.
Before leaving the court, substitute Gaye contributed 10 points and 7 rebounds, while Reed added 7 points and 6 rebounds. It's worth noting that the NBA games that night were highly charged, marking the second clash in the league that evening.
While not as severe as the massive brawl between the Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets, this hefty fine still demonstrates the league's determination to improve on-court discipline.
Currently, the Timberwolves are preparing for the season with a record of 33 wins and 22 losses, while the Hawks (26 wins and 29 losses), who have suffered consecutive losses, urgently need to adjust their form to meet the challenges ahead.
