According to NBA insider Ary on Wednesday, the Atlanta Hawks are preparing to waive Jacob Toppin. Toppin underwent surgery on Monday for a torn labrum in his right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

The Hawks have also notified several player agents that they plan to use their newly freed-up two-way contract roster to sign a guard. The team may finalize their selection before the G League winter showcase from December 19th to 22nd, or wait until after the showcase to make a decision.

Toppin, 25, is a 2.06-meter tall, 91-kilogram forward who entered the NBA in 2023 as an undrafted free agent. To date, he has played 31 regular season games for the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks, averaging 1.4 points, 0.7 rebounds, and 0.3 assists in 4.2 minutes per game, shooting 6-for-14 from the field and 2-for-2 from three-point range.

In July of this year, Toppin signed a new two-way contract with the Hawks. He subsequently averaged 1.6 points, 0.2 rebounds, and 0.2 assists in five regular-season games, helping the Hawks to a 14-11 record and ninth place in the Eastern Conference.

Toppin also played for the Westchester Knicks and the Klitch Parker Hawks in the G League, appearing in a total of 26 games. He averaged 16.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals in 32.0 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 43.8% and a three-point percentage of 31.9%.
