Serie A newcomers Pisa announced on Tuesday that Oscar Hijemak will replace Alberto Gilardino as their first-team manager, effective immediately. The contract runs until June 2027, with an option to extend.
Hijımål is only 33 years old. As a player, he represented Sweden in the 2016 European Championship and the 2018 World Cup. He began his coaching career in 2021 and achieved a record of 60 wins, 25 draws and 37 losses while coaching Aalborg and Elfsborg.
This move to take over Pisa will mark Hijémark's first time managing a team in one of Europe's top five leagues. However, he faces the extremely challenging task of avoiding relegation: Pisa's performance this season under Gilardino has been lackluster, sitting second-to-last in Serie A after 23 rounds with a record of 1 win, 11 draws, and 11 losses, accumulating 14 points.
Nevertheless, Hijermac still displayed unwavering confidence in his first interview after taking office: "This is a fantastic opportunity, and Pisa is a great club. I hope to work together with everyone to achieve our goal of avoiding relegation."
"We are in a difficult situation right now, but we still have the opportunity to achieve great things together. This team is strong and has high-level players, and the real work will begin today."
