Zinedine Zidane said on Tuesday he hopes to have the opportunity to coach the France national team in the future.
"My dream is to take charge of the French national team, but not right now," he told Gazzetta dello Sport's Trento Sports Festival. "I hope that one day I can do that, but we have to wait and see."
Regardless, Zidane has never given up on the idea of coaching. He made it clear: "I will definitely return to coaching. This is already in my career plan."
Zidane, 51, was the central midfielder of France's golden generation of '98. During his playing career, he won the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship with his national team. He also won one Champions League, two Serie A titles, one La Liga title, two UEFA Super Cups, one Italian Super Cup, two Spanish Super Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, and two Intertoto Cups with Porto, Juventus, and Real Madrid. He also won one Ballon d'Or (1998) and three FIFA World Player of the Year awards (1998, 2000, and 2003).
Zidane began his coaching career at Real Madrid as an assistant coach in July 2013. He has served as Real Madrid's head coach twice since 2016, during which time he has compiled a record of 174 wins, 53 draws, and 36 losses, leading the team to three Champions League titles, two Club World Cups, two La Liga titles, two European Super Cups, and two Spanish Super Cups.
In June 2021, Zidane resigned as Real Madrid manager, citing physical and mental fatigue. He has been unemployed since then, and has been linked with moves to Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Bayern Munich, and other teams. However, Zidane's current priority remains the opportunity to succeed Didier Deschamps as head coach of the French national team.
