The Boston Celtics announced Friday that they have reached a long-term contract extension with head coach Joe Mazzulla. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, per team policy.
The 37-year-old Mazzula has served as an assistant coach for the Greenville State University Pioneers, the Fairmont State University Fighting Falcons, the Maine Red Claws, and the Boston Celtics. He succeeded Ime Udoka as the 19th head coach in Celtics history in February 2023. To date, he has led the team to a 182-64 record in the regular season, with a winning percentage of 74.0%.
After entering the playoffs, Mazzula also performed well, leading the team to a 33-17 record and winning the 2024 NBA championship.
In the 2024/25 season, the Celtics finished second in the Eastern Conference with a record of 61 wins and 21 losses, successfully advancing to the playoffs. Although they eventually lost to the New York Knicks 2-4 in the Eastern Conference semifinals, Mazzula's coaching ability was still widely recognized.
After the contract extension was completed, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens said: "We are very pleased that Joe has agreed to re-sign with the Celtics. He understands the meaning of this job and his love for the Celtics is only matched by our most passionate fans. He is diligent and has achieved extraordinary success in his first three years as head coach - including averaging more than 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA championship."
"Joe is a gifted leader who is always committed to learning, improving and making the most of every opportunity he has playing for the Celtics."
Mazzulla added, "This has been a tremendous blessing. I wouldn't be where I am today without my faith, my wife, and my children. We are incredibly grateful for the partnership of the front office, the guidance of Brad Stevens, and the support of the entire staff. Most importantly, I am deeply grateful to the players I've had the privilege of coaching over the past three seasons. I look forward to continuing to play for the Celtics and the city of Boston."
